›Do I have to charge VAT on my quote?
Only if you're registered for VAT with SARS. If you are, show VAT (15%) as a separate line and include your VAT number. If you're not registered, don't add VAT — and it's good practice to note that you're not VAT registered.
›How long should a quote be valid?
14 days is standard for most trades — long enough for the customer to decide, short enough to protect you if material prices change. State the validity period clearly on the quote.
›What's the difference between a quote and an invoice?
A quote is an offer of a price before the work — the customer approves it. An invoice is the request for payment after (or as) the work is done. The template below is for quotes; the same structure works for invoices with a due date instead of a validity period.
